Thirty-seven inmates of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison have sat for the Teacher Licensure Examination as part of their rehabilitation and reformation programme.
The inmates, who have completed their degree programmes while in custody, wrote the examination at the prison facility on Monday, September 14, 2026.
This was disclosed by the Ghana Prisons Service in a Facebook post on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
According to the Service, the examination was conducted under strict supervision by two external invigilators, with support from officers of the Prisons Service.
The Service said the initiative is part of its broader commitment to using education as a key tool for the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
It explained that providing inmates with opportunities to pursue higher education and acquire professional qualifications will enhance their chances of securing productive livelihoods after serving their sentences.
The Service noted that the participation of the 37 inmates in the licensure examination equips them with qualifications that could enable them to pursue careers in teaching and other fields.
It added that such educational interventions reflect its ongoing efforts to prepare inmates for successful reintegration and to enable them to contribute positively to society after their release.
