47 Ghanaian Health Workers Leave for Saint Kitts and Nevis on Govt Migration Programme

Forty-seven health professionals have left Ghana for Saint Kitts and Nevis, becoming the second group deployed under the government’s Health Workforce Migration Initiative.

The deployment forms part of a bilateral arrangement to export skilled health labour while giving Ghanaian workers international experience.

Speaking before their departure, *Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah*, charged the team to be disciplined and committed on the job. She urged them to “work diligently, make Ghana proud, and return home with valuable experience to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

She noted over *70,000 nurses alone are yet to be employed*, with additional numbers from 2021-2025 cohorts still at home. Government has started recruiting about *25,000 from the 2021 group* this year, but is also pursuing “innovative solutions” to the backlog.

The Health Workforce Migration Initiative is designed to create overseas opportunities for Ghanaian health professionals, while ensuring the country benefits from the skills, training, and remittances they bring back.

The 47 professionals are the second batch to be sent to the Caribbean nation under the programme.
