The Lower West Akim Municipality has been thrown into mourning after a couple drowned while attempting to cross a river swollen by heavy rains on Sunday.
Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Paulina Akabila described the incident as “a heartbreaking moment for Osenase” and extended condolences to the bereaved family and community.
According to Hon. Akabila, the couple had gone to their farm and were returning home when they tried to cross the river. The woman was reportedly swept away by the strong floodwaters. Her husband, in a desperate attempt to save her, also lost his life.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with community volunteers, launched a search operation. The body of the husband was recovered on Monday.
This morning, Hon. Akabila joined traditional authorities at the scene to perform customary rites and pour libation before the search for the missing woman resumed.
Through the tireless efforts of the NADMO rescue team and residents, her body was later recovered. Libation was again poured in line with tradition before she was laid to rest.
Hon. Akabila subsequently visited the bereaved family to extend her heartfelt condolences and assure them of the Assembly’s support during this difficult period.
“My deepest sympathies go to the family and the entire Osenase community. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace,” the MCE stated.
Sunday’s rains caused several rivers in the Lower West Akim Municipality to overflow their banks, with local authorities urging residents to avoid crossing flooded water bodies.
