Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Hon. Rev Kwaku Addo, has called for urgent national intervention after illegal dumping at Weija was found to be blocking a key water holding bay, worsening flood risks in the constituency.
Rev Addo, together with the Ablekuma West MCE and NADMO coordinators, toured Ablekuma West and the neighboring Weija Gbawe Constituency to investigate the persistent flooding affecting the area, particularly Otodjor.
The team’s assessment found that a holding bay designed to contain rainwater runoff at Weija is being illegally filled with refuse by encroachers. Rev Addo said the activity has obstructed the natural flow of water, creating dangerous flood conditions.
“This reckless activity has blocked the natural flow of water, creating dangerous flood conditions that threaten lives, property, and the wellbeing of residents across Ablekuma West,” Rev Addo stated.
The MP is now appealing to the Minister of Works and Housing, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, and National Security to step in immediately and stop the illegal dumping.
“The situation demands urgent national attention, as the consequences of inaction will be catastrophic for the community and beyond,” Rev Addo added.
Flooding has been a recurring problem in parts of Ablekuma West, with Otodjor frequently affected during heavy rains. Residents have repeatedly called for lasting solutions to protect homes and livelihoods.
