A Consultant Urologist at the Trust Hospital and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Professor Mathew Yamoah Kyei, has cautioned men against penile enlargement procedures, saying any penis size can satisfy a woman.
According to him, most complaints about penis size are psychological rather than physical, as the size is not significant enough to affect sexual satisfaction.
Prof. Kyei explained that surgical enlargement yields a maximum gain of only two to three centimetres in circumference and requires rigorous screening, while newer filler injections using hyaluronic acid and lidocaine last only six to 18 months and must be repeated.
He warned that both methods carry severe complications.
"Penis sizes can be affected by medical conditions or infections, however, for the majority of men who complain about having a small penis, it is simply a mindset issue. We can use surgery to increase the size, but that comes with serious complications. In recent times, we have a newer approach using injections, but this also carries risks. It is important to know that these injections last for only six months to a maximum of one and a half years, after which you must return for another treatment. If the procedure is not performed correctly, it can cause severe problems for the individual by blocking the veins that return blood to the heart, leading to collapse and, in severe cases, death," he said.
His warning follows the death of 43-year-old businessman Igho Ubiribo, who died from a fatal pulmonary embolism after receiving a 40ml injection of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok.
Prof. Kyei stressed that elective enlargement is medically unnecessary and could result in permanent impotence when botched, noting that such procedures are usually reserved for patients who need reconstructive surgery after accidents or severe infections.
"This procedure is not common. In most instances, those who undergo such operations are patients who have suffered accidents or severe infections requiring reconstructive surgery. Doing it purely for enlargement is rare. Women do not require an unusually large penis to achieve sexual satisfaction. Any size can satisfy a partner," he explained.
He added that even after the procedure, many men remain dissatisfied with the results.
"For men, wanting a large penis is only for showing off. It is just a mindset. It is advisable for men to keep what they have and be content with it. There are several men who go through the process and are still not satisfied with the size. That is why I am advising men not to waste their resources on going for the procedure. Unless it is a medically required procedure, stay away from it."
