FC Barcelona have jumped ahead of Real Madrid in the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, according to journalist Ramon Alvarez.
Over the past few hours, Barca made a major move by opening direct talks with both Rodri’s camp and Manchester City’s board. That has put them in front of their rivals.
The shift happened because Real Madrid’s negotiations with City have hit a wall, reports Matteo Moretto. Madrid had been in advanced discussions and were trying to negotiate down City’s €75m valuation, but the two clubs couldn’t agree on a final fee.
Deco and Barcelona’s sporting team spotted the opportunity and acted fast.
Fabrizio Romano adds that both Spanish giants are now willing to pay almost the same amount to City for the 30-year-old defensive midfielder.
With the money on the table now similar, the decision is down to Rodri. He had reportedly agreed personal terms with Madrid days ago because he wanted to return to his hometown. But Barca’s late push, plus a big financial offer, has made him reconsider.
Moretto also reports that several of Rodri’s Spain teammates at Barcelona have been calling him daily, urging him to join them instead. They are selling him the idea of being the main man in Hansi Flick’s midfield, especially with Frenkie de Jong out long-term.
For now, Barcelona appear to have the edge.
