Security personnel employed under the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Bono Region have suspended work on weekends and public holidays over unpaid allowances owed them since January 2026.
The members, under the Ghana Education Service Security Association, say they have worked tirelessly over the years to protect lives and property within GES facilities, but their efforts have not been recognised.
According to the group, several efforts to get the allowances paid have proved fruitless.
Speaking to the media, the National Secretary of the Association, Paul Bukari, said the allowance in question is 55% of basic salary. He explained that if a security man's basic salary is GH₵1,000, he is entitled to GH₵550 as allowance.
He announced that from Saturday and Sunday onwards, and on any public holiday, members will not perform duty until the allowances are paid.
Mr. Bukari also warned against intimidation from GES management, saying the group had received reports that some headmasters, headmistresses and directors were threatening staff who join the action with salary suspension or non-validation.
> "If we found out that one of our colleagues has informed us that a headmaster or headmistress or director is intimidating him, that if you did not come to work, I will suspend your salary or I will not validate you, we will not take the law into our own hands but we will let the law take its own course," he said.
The group presented a petition to Vincent Owusu Apraku, Vice President of the Teachers and Educational Workers' Union (TEWU) for Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions, who received it on behalf of the union.
Mr. Apraku assured the group that the document would be sent to the head office in Accra for redress of their demands.
The security personnel say they will only resume weekend and holiday duties when their allowances are paid.
