Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has appealed to the striking teacher unions to call off their nationwide strike, assuring them that government is addressing their concerns.
Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the teacher unions today, September 28, Mr Iddrisu said government as employer is ready to resolve the issues through give and take.
He warned that the continued strike could disrupt Ghana's academic calendar which has been stabilized for the first time in five years.
"This is the first time ever in five years to indicate that Ghana must stabilize and normalize its academic calendar for all levels of education that we hold dear," he said.
The Minister noted that this year, students from secondary schools have been able to seamlessly join universities in September, and government wants the calendar to remain so.
"So a disruption of it can be fatal for the country and for the future of those young learners," he stressed.
Mr Iddrisu yielded the floor to the union leaders to state their problems, but said the state wants to persuade them that their issues are not above resolution.
"As I said the state as your employer will want to persuade you that your issues are not above government resolution. They are within our resolution, some of them not all of them, but on the basis of give and take which should be the negotiation," he stated.
