“Come Forward”: GHS Appeals for Public Help to Find Missing Baby From Salaga Hospital, Puts All Clinics Nationwide on Alert for Suspicious cases

The Ghana Health Service has interdicted staff on duty during the disappearance of a newborn at the East Gonja Municipal Hospital in Salaga and confirmed they are now facing criminal charges.

In a press release issued Tuesday, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate (SRHD) gave an update on the incident first reported on 11th June 2026. The statement was signed by Regional Director of Health Service, Dr. John Ekow Otoo.

*Criminal proceedings, interdiction*

According to the SRHD, staff responsible for the baby’s care before her disappearance have been arraigned before the Tamale High Court and are currently facing criminal proceedings.

“In accordance with the GHS Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures, the staff in question have been interdicted pending the outcome of the case,” the release said.

*Search ongoing, public appeal renewed*

The Directorate said it continues to work closely with the Ghana Police Service in the search for the baby. It renewed an appeal to the public for information, urging anyone with leads to contact the nearest police station, the SRHD, or the East Gonja Municipal Hospital.

“All information provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” the SRHD stated.

Hospitals, child welfare clinics and Community Health Officers nationwide have also been asked to remain alert for any mother-baby pair whose circumstances appear suspicious and to report immediately to police.

*Probe and support measures*

Dr. Otoo has constituted a seven-member Investigation Committee to probe the circumstances of the loss, recommend disciplinary action where necessary, and propose measures to prevent future occurrences.

Psychological support has been arranged for the baby’s parents. The Directorate extended its “deepest sympathies to the baby’s parents and family during this difficult period.”

The GHS reaffirmed its commitment to “timely, high-quality, and comprehensive healthcare” and to upholding “the highest standards of safety and accountability across all its facilities.”
