The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reversed its position on a 2024 GH¢12 million supply contract during its appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament.
According to the Auditor-General’s report, the supply contract was signed by the Ministry of Energy in the name of ECG. However, during the audit process, ECG reportedly told auditors that it had no knowledge of the contract.
In a surprising turn during the PAC sitting, ECG’s Director of Finance, Prince Nkansah Twum, acknowledged the contract.
The Committee questioned the inconsistency, noting that ECG had twice indicated in its response to the auditors’ recommendations that it had no knowledge of the deal.
“Honourable Chair, our investigation proved that it was ECG that awarded the contract,” a member of the Committee said. “So surprising in your response twice, in the recommendation of the auditors, you first indicated that you have no knowledge about it. So it sounds strange to me that now you are telling us that you now admit that such contract was done.”
The Committee then asked ECG to provide documents to support the transaction.
“Do you have documents to support this transaction?”
“Yes Honourable Chair, we do have documents to that effect,” Mr. Twum responded.
When asked where the documents were, he said:
“Honourable Chair, please we don’t have them readily available but we can provide them.”
