The Executive Director of Revenue Mobilisation Africa, Mr Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey, has waded into the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mr Ocansey said the MP was invited by EOCO on two separate occasions in February 2026 in his capacity as the head of a legal firm and failed to honour the invitations.
He said aside from being a lawyer, the MP is the head of a legal entity who is expected to know better, and described it as worrying that he failed to respect EOCO and accord the Office the needed respect.
"Right or wrong is known to him and that guided his action," Mr Ocansey stated.
According to EOCO, the invitations were for the MP to assist with an ongoing investigation linked to his law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners. The attempted arrest at the Accra High Court on September 23, 2026 followed the non-compliance. The MP, however, disputes the account, saying his firm responded on three occasions and submitted a written statement.
Mr Ocansey said his major worry is the approach adopted by EOCO in handling the matter at the court premises.
"I think the lady from EOCO should have produced an Identity Card and an Arrest Warrant. I also think she should have allowed the MP to drive to EOCO when he decided on that," he said.
He noted that the MP had offered to drive himself to the EOCO offices, but the official insisted he should use their vehicle, a situation he described as high risk and an exposure of weakness.
"That is where deep misunderstanding stepped in, the EOCO official insisting on one option when she clearly did not have support was a high risk and an exposure to weakness. She could have allowed the MP to drive to EOCO as he offered to do to avoid creating the sad scene," he stressed.
Mr Ocansey said while he disagrees with the MP's disrespect towards EOCO, the officer should have managed the situation better to avoid the public scuffle that was captured on video.
He has therefore called on the Minister for the Interior and the Attorney General to meet with heads of security and anti-corruption institutions to discuss arrest procedures.
"Early approaches plus this one do not align better with reset agenda," he noted.
