Lawyers for Dennis Miracles Aboagye say he cannot meet the bail conditions set by EOCO after his arrest.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office granted him bail at GH¢50 million with three sureties, and two of those sureties must have properties to back it. His legal team says those terms are practically impossible to fulfill.
Addressing journalists at EOCO’s offices, lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea questioned how his client could raise such an amount on short notice.
“How will he be released? How will he post GH¢50 million in bail, with three sureties, two of them justified? Where do you even find properties worth GH¢50 million overnight?” he asked.
Aboagye, who serves as an aide to NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was picked up by EOCO at Kotoka International Airport.
EOCO says the arrest is connected to an ongoing probe into alleged financial and procurement breaches involving about GH¢55 million during his time as Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation.[IMCCoD]
He was arrested together with the Committee’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, as part of the same investigation.
