Ghana Issues Travel Advisory for Nationals in South Africa Over Planned Protests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urging Ghanaians travelling to or living in South Africa to exercise “a high degree of caution” amid heightened anti-African campaigns and planned nationwide demonstrations.

In a travel advisory issued Sunday, the Ministry cited a *nationwide shutdown and protests scheduled for June 30, 2026*, plus an “unofficial departure deadline” for foreign African nationals being pushed by certain activist groups. It warned these could lead to intimidation, violence, and attacks targeting foreign Africans.

The Ministry noted that *South Africa’s government says the deadline has no legal backing* and that law enforcement is ready to maintain public order.

Ghanaians heading to South Africa are urged to:

- *Reconsider non-essential travel* to areas with planned demonstrations

- *Monitor local news and updates* from the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria

- *Avoid all protests, marches, roadblocks and large gatherings*

- *Stay vigilant* in transport hubs, malls, taxi ranks, and entertainment areas

- *Keep travel documents handy* and carry copies separately from originals

- *Avoid night travel* unless absolutely necessary

- *Share travel plans* with family and stay in regular contact

*Advice for Ghanaians Already in South Africa:*

The Ministry also asked nationals there to:

- *Limit unnecessary movement* during the period of tension

- *Stay away from protest routes and unrest areas*

- *Keep emergency supplies, medication, and phones ready*

- *Have an emergency contact plan* with family

- *Report any threats or attacks* to SAPS and the Ghana High Commission immediately
