GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE PERMANENT SOLUTION TO FLOODING IN 2027 BUDGET - FINANCE MINISTER

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, says government will provide funding in the 2027 Budget and Medium Term for a comprehensive and permanent solution to flooding in Accra and other flood-prone areas across the country.

Presenting the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Dr. Forson said the directive was given by President John Mahama.

He said the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources has been tasked to develop the permanent solution.

The Minister opened his address by acknowledging the devastating floods that struck parts of the country last month. He noted that the floods claimed lives, displaced families, destroyed businesses and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure.

*"Ghana was not alone. Similar floods also affected Nigeria, Lokoja and Cotonou highlighting the growing flood risk across West African coastline and the effect of climate change,"* he told the House.

Dr. Forson said government responded swiftly by visiting the hardest hit communities, releasing funds for emergency relief and launching a nationwide clean up exercise.

He added that on the direction of the President, additional resources are being made available for ongoing dredging and construction of critical drains in the affected areas.

The Finance Minister also expressed pride in government’s economic management over the last one and a half years.

*"Mr Speaker, I stand before this house with a deep sense of pride and confidence born out of strong performance in the last one and half years in the management of the Ghanaian economy,"* he stated.
