Gov’t Plans Advanced Lab at Suame Magazine to Back Local Auto Parts Production

Government intends to set up an advanced laboratory at Suame Magazine in the Ashanti Region to strengthen Ghana’s auto industry and support local manufacturers.

Head of Strategic Manufacturing at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Kwasi Ofori-Antwi, disclosed the plan during the Citi Business Festival 2026 Roundtable themed “Driving Ghana Forward: The State of the Automotive Assembly Industry and Its Contribution to the Economy.”

He said the facility will give critical technical backing to artisans and manufacturers at Suame Magazine, with a focus on metal alloying, metal analysis, and post-component production.

Ofori-Antwi described Suame Magazine as one of West Africa’s biggest industrial and engineering hubs, with “enormous untapped potential” to support vehicle assembly and parts manufacturing in Ghana.

“We have an artisanal industry which will be very important to our automotive industry. When we brought those who are helping us develop the policy and we took them to Suame Magazine, they were very amazed to see the potential that we had at Suame Magazine,” he said.

“So for Suame Magazine, we are looking at establishing an advanced laboratory for them so that it can help them with the alloying of their metals, metal analyses and also post-component manufacturing.”

The lab is part of a wider government drive to bring Ghana’s informal manufacturing sector into the formal automotive industrialisation agenda, linking artisanal skills to vehicle assembly plants and component supply chains.
