The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Hon. Dr. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has criticized government for what he describes as a disappointing start to the emergency recall of Parliament.
According to the MP, the government "rudely" interrupted the recess of Members of Parliament for an emergency meeting but has failed to present any serious business after two days of sitting.
Speaking on the ongoing five-day emergency session, Dr. Mahama said MPs have been left idle without work.
"The government rudely cut short the recess of members of parliament for emergency meeting. For the five days sitting, we have wasted two so far without any serious business presented and members are still idle," he lamented.
He described the situation as disappointing, questioning why a government that requested an abridgment of time to deal with urgent matters has not been able to present its business.
"It's so far disappointing. A government requesting for abridgment of time to deal with certain urgent matters to have failed to present its business is telling," he said.
The Walewale legislator warned that the pattern could lead to government rushing Parliament to approve critical matters within 24 hours after wasting days.
"The funny thing is that the government will present a matter later and want it approved within 24 hours, when a lot of days have been wasted. The government should get serious," he added.
Parliament was recalled by Speaker Alban Bagbin on Monday, August 24, for a five-day emergency sitting to consider the Banks Amendment Bill, two ministerial nominations and three Supreme Court nominees.
