NDC National Women’s Organiser hopeful and former Member of Parliament for Kwahu Afram Plains North, Hon. Betty Krosbi Mensah, has congratulated Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson on her election as National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a statement issued on Saturday, Hon. Krosbi Mensah described Hawa Koomson as a former colleague in Parliament and wished her wisdom, strength and success in her new role.
"I warmly congratulate Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, a former colleague in Parliament, on her election as the National Women's Organiser of the New Patriotic Party. I wish her wisdom, strength and success as she takes on this important responsibility," she said.
She noted that as a former MP herself, she understands the responsibility that comes with leadership and the expectations placed on women who occupy important positions in political parties.
However, Hon. Krosbi Mensah respectfully condemned the suggestion of providing pepper spray to women organisers as a response to political violence.
"While I congratulate Hon. Hawa, I must respectfully condemn the suggestion of providing pepper spray to women organisers as a response to political violence. I understand that the intention may be to promote personal safety and self-defence, particularly in light of her own experiences. However, as women leaders, I believe our message must fundamentally be one of peace, unity, stability and responsible leadership, rather than anything that may be perceived as promoting violence or confrontation," she stated.
According to her, women organisers should rather be empowered with knowledge, skills, economic opportunities, access to resources, leadership training and platforms that strengthen their participation in national development.
"That is the kind of empowerment that can transform the lives of women and communities," she added.
She stressed that political differences should not prevent a shared commitment to the welfare and advancement of Ghanaian women.
"We may belong to different political traditions, but we can work towards a Ghana where women are confident, protected, respected and empowered to lead," she noted.
Hon. Krosbi Mensah reiterated her own commitment to an agenda founded on peace, unity, inclusion, opportunity, empowerment and strong women’s leadership as she pursues her bid as NDC National Women’s Organiser hopeful.
