Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency and Second Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, says the late former President Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills fundamentally changed how he relates to people and leads.
Speaking in Parliament to mark 14 years since Prof. Mills’ demise on July 24, 2012, Hon. Shaib described the late President as a model of humility, truthfulness and forgiveness.
*“I got fully converted after Professor Mills’ demise on issues of how to relate to people, and how to be submissive and show humility,”* Hon. Shaib said.
He added that President Mills showed Ghanaians that leadership must be rooted in truth and consistency.
*“He is the man who spoke the truth and ensured that he stood by whatever he said,”* the MP stated.
Hon. Shaib further noted that Prof. Mills’ life taught us there was no place for bitterness in politics.
“Professor Mills showed us a lot that there’s no reason for anybody to be vindictive,” he said. *“Even in disagreement, he was measured. Even in power, he was humble. That is the kind of leadership we must emulate in Parliament and in our constituencies.”*
The Weija-Gbawe MP also recounted efforts made during his tenure as CEO of the Coastal Development Authority to preserve Prof. Mills’ legacy.
*“Through President Nana Akufo-Addo, we refurbished and rehabilitated Asomdwee Park, which had been deserted for several reasons. It was important that the resting place of a President who stood for peace was given the dignity it deserves,”* Hon. Shaib said.
He urged current leaders to honor Prof. Mills’ memory by practicing the values he lived by.
*“If we truly want to honor him, then we must practice what he lived: humility, submission to the will of the people, and respect in how we treat one another,”* he concluded.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills served as President of Ghana from January 2009 until his death in 2012. He is remembered for his “Better Ghana Agenda” and commitment to peace and national unity.
