The government is constructing 1,000 kilometres of feeder roads across the country to improve the transportation of food from farming communities to urban centres, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has said.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 2026 Agrifair in Obuasi, organised by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr. Dumelo said the construction of the agricultural roads forms part of efforts to improve access to markets for farmers.
He said government is also establishing many processing centres in farming areas to reduce post-harvest losses and add value to agriculture.
According to him, the mini processing centres will help farmers process surplus produce instead of losing it after harvest.
The Deputy Minister disclosed that farm centres are being established across the country, including one in Obuasi, with construction already underway at some locations.
"All we are doing, we are trying to encourage all-year-round farming for tomatoes so that the prices become stable," Mr. Dumelo said.
He said prices of food items have relatively been low over the last few months, and expressed hope that by next year, prices will be very stable for farmers and consumers.
Mr. Dumelo also called on corporate institutions to invest in farming, particularly dry-season farming, to attract the youth into agriculture.
"It's important for corporate institutions to go into farming, but they should be able to get into farming at the right time. We are encouraging dry-season farming, so some of these corporate institutions can do dry-season farming, let's say from December to June," he said.
