President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana's mix of religions should bring the country together rather than divide it, and he has pledged to govern for all faiths without favour.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, October 14, while addressing the 10th World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra, held under the theme One Mandate, Every Nation.
The President said although his Christian faith gives him strength, his oath of office binds him to serve every Ghanaian equally, whether Christian, Muslim, traditionalist, or a person of no faith.
"As President, I've sworn duty to serve every Ghanaian: Christians of every denomination, Muslims, adherents of traditional religion, and even our citizens who profess no faith," he told the gathering.
Mr. Mahama admitted that his even-handed approach to faith matters has at times led some Christian leaders to question his convictions. He insisted, however, that fairness must remain the guiding principle of his presidency.
He described the country's religious pluralism as one of its most valuable treasures, one that must be carefully nurtured so that neighbours of different beliefs can continue to live, work and look out for one another.
"Ghana's religious diversity is our most precious possession, and we must continue to nurture the relationships that enable neighbours of different faiths to live, work and care for one another," he said.
Sharing a personal reflection, the President said he grew up in a family where members belong to different faiths, yet that difference has never weakened the love and affection they share.
"Nevertheless, our different religions do not affect the love and affection that we share," he said.
He also urged churches to play an active role in national development by promoting honesty, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace, while retaining the freedom to speak out against injustice and suffering.
