Minority Caucus Slams Government Over Welfare Failures Of Black Queens And Glasgow 2026 Team

The Minority Caucus in Parliament says Ghana’s athletes deserve dignity, not neglect, and is demanding answers from government over poor treatment of the Black Queens and the country’s contingent to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In a statement signed by *Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP, Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports*, the Caucus said it had received disturbing reports of administrative failure, financial uncertainty and disregard for athlete welfare by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

*Key allegations raised:*

Travel chaos: Airline tickets were issued late, had no luggage allowance, or could not be found. Some athletes and officials had to abandon flights and travel by train or bus.

Poor equipment and kits: Competition kits arrived late, with some athletes receiving them only after their events. Others had to seek private sponsorship or buy their own equipment. Raincoats were allegedly not provided despite Glasgow’s weather, affecting athletes in athletics and para athletics.

No clarity on payments: The team reportedly left Ghana without being told how much per diem or medal bonuses they would get.

Poor supervision: About 90% of officials were housed at the Moxy Hotel while athletes were in other hotels with little supervision.

Para athlete mistreatment: A para athlete was allegedly checked out of his hotel hours after competing, without his per diem, and sent to the airport at 5:55 a.m. for a 3:00 p.m. flight.

The Caucus also noted that the *Black Queens* have publicly complained about outstanding bonuses for Egypt 2025, WAFCON qualification, and group stage games, plus unpaid per diems. They are also asking for better management and mental health support.

The Minority called this “a potentially systemic failure” in how government manages national athletes.

Demands Made:*

1. A full public account from the Ministry on ticketing, accommodation, equipment and welfare for Glasgow.

2. Immediate payment of all outstanding per diems and bonuses owed to Glasgow athletes and the Black Queens.

3. Disclosure of the approved budget for the Commonwealth Games.
