More Than Half of Accra–Kumasi Expressway Corridor Cleared, GAF Reports

The Ghana Armed Forces says it has cleared over half of the land corridor for the planned Accra–Kumasi Expressway, reaching a key milestone in the project’s preparatory phase.

In an update released on the project, GAF disclosed that as of June 25, 2026, 89.5 kilometres of the corridor had been cleared. That represents 50.9 percent of the total route.

Colonel Alex Twumasi, the project coordinator and manager, said the entire clearing work is set for completion in 20 weeks. He noted that more than half of it was done within the first nine weeks.

“The GAF Engineers have been tasked with executing one of the most important phases of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, and that is clearing and stripping the right of way covering a distance of 175.6km and a width of 120 meters.

“This phase is scheduled to be completed in 20 weeks, and it is intended to create the conditions for the commencement of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” he said.

Authorities say the project is moving ahead of schedule. The remaining 86.1 kilometres are expected to be cleared in the next 13 weeks, which should open the way for the next stages of construction.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is a major government initiative designed to cut travel time between Ghana’s two biggest cities, reduce congestion on the current road, and improve the movement of people and goods.

The ongoing corridor-clearing work is a critical first step to secure the required right of way before major construction begins.
