MTN Ghana says it has no plans to exit the country amid concerns over recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where its parent company is based.
Speaking at the 2026 MTN Media and Stakeholder Forum in Takoradi for journalists from the Central and Western Regions, the company’s Chief Internal Audit and Forensics Officer, Michael Gbewonyo, said Ghana remains a key market for the telco.
“MTN is here to stay. We are not going anywhere,” he stated, dismissing suggestions that the unrest in South Africa could force the company to reconsider its operations in Ghana.
Mr. Gbewonyo reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital and economic growth. He said the company will continue to expand its network, promote digital inclusion, create jobs for Ghanaians, and work with government and other partners to drive national transformation.
He pointed to MTN’s 30 years in Ghana as proof of that commitment, citing its contributions through taxes, corporate social responsibility, and job creation. He also noted the company’s decision to list shares on the Ghana Stock Exchange and its investments through the MTN Ghana Foundation.
“Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, thousands of young people have received scholarships and support to pursue their dreams,” he said.
“In communities across the Western and Central Regions and beyond, our investments in health, education, and economic empowerment are changing lives every day.”
According to him, MTN contributes about 6% of Ghana’s total tax revenue. He said the company’s growth has been built not just on business, but on trust, accountability, and customer-focused service.
Reflecting on three decades in the country, Mr. Gbewonyo thanked customers, staff, communities, government, and the media for their support. He said feedback from stakeholders has helped the company improve services and bridge the digital divide.
“We are proud of our achievements, not because of the size of our business, but because of the impact we have made together,” he added.
He pledged that MTN will continue to work with stakeholders to create more impact in the years ahead.
