The National Democratic Congress has cleared over 15,000 aspirants to contest its upcoming constituency executive elections.
Director of Elections and IT of the party, Mahdi Gibril, said out of the total number who filed, only about 25 aspirants were disqualified during vetting.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Mr. Gibril said the current figure is the highest number of aspirants the party has ever recorded for constituency elections.
"From what we receive as submitted, we're talking about almost 15,000-plus that have been able to submit their forms for the elections. However, by the end of the vetting, just about only 25 people were disqualified. So we don't have a huge number that have been disqualified across the country," he said.
He disclosed that about 480 aspirants will be going unopposed in their various constituencies and will be declared elected.
According to him, the high number shows growing interest in constituency-level positions in the NDC.
"This is also one of the largest numbers for the party where the interest is high," he stated.
Mr. Gibril said the surge in interest could be linked to the party's return to government, noting that this is the first time the NDC is holding constituency executive elections while in power.
"If you compare the data, you realise that this time around the interest of people to contest party positions has gone high," he said.
He said candidates who are unopposed are deemed elected, while those with contenders have already started campaigning ahead of the polls.
