Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a new integrated model for basic school infrastructure aimed at ending the schools under trees phenomenon in Ghana.
Speaking at the Ghana Teacher Prize event, the Minister was responding to concerns raised by the President of NAGRAT, referencing the Auditor General's Report 2025 which indicates that *10,730 schools are still under trees, affecting 13 regions and about 3 million children.*
According to Haruna Iddrisu, President John Dramani Mahama has approved a new integrated model of basic education to address the challenge.
> "I wrote to the Minister for Local Government and to every District Assembly on Friday that henceforth every education infrastructure at the basic level must reflect the integrated model," he stated.
He said government will make adequate provision in the GETFund formula to fund the project and drastically reduce the number of schools under trees.
The Minister explained that under the new model, a single school block will incorporate:
- Kindergarten
- Primary 1 to Primary 6
- Junior High School
- Changing room
- Laboratory, Library and IT system
He stressed that this integrated building will be the standard model for basic education infrastructure across Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama.
"President, be assured that the government of President Mahama will invest in it," he added.
