Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved a constitutional amendment to make the party’s elected presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved by acclamation at the party’s National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The proposal, listed as Motion Number 10, sought to amend Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the NPP constitution to provide that when the party has an elected presidential candidate, that candidate becomes the leader of the party.
Delegates also approved a related provision clarifying the party’s leadership structure when it is in government.
Under the revised provision, the President becomes the leader of the party while the NPP is in government, until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The amendment is expected to clearly define the party’s leadership hierarchy, depending on whether the party is in government or has an elected flagbearer.
