The New Patriotic Party [NPP] has described the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedinam Christine Tamakloe Attionu as “a travesty of justice and further evidence of a politicised justice system.”
In a statement issued on July 30, 2026 and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said it received the ruling “with utter shock and dismay.”
Ms. Tamakloe Attionu was convicted by the High Court in April 2024 on multiple counts of stealing, causing financial loss to the State, money laundering and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. She was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for actions that, according to the trial court, caused a loss of almost GH¢90 million to the taxpayer during her tenure as MASLOC CEO from 2013 to 2016.
The NPP noted that she fled jurisdiction while on trial, was convicted in absentia, and was extradited from the United States on June 9, 2026. “Barely seven weeks later, she walks free,” the statement said.
Citing the judgment of Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, the party said the trial court detailed “fraudulent disbursements, unaccounted-for funds including monies meant for loan beneficiaries and for victims of the Kantamanto Market disaster, and deliberate schemes by which MASLOC resources were diverted.” It added that overturning such a conviction “defies logic, law and common sense.”
*Allegations of Political Motivation*
The NPP stated that the acquittal was _“politically motivated, orchestrated and planned,”_ pointing to the speed of the decision and the Attorney-General’s record of nolle prosequi and discontinuances since January 2025 in cases involving persons affiliated to the governing party.
“What could not be achieved through the front door of a nolle prosequi... has now been achieved through the back door,” the party said.
_“The message this government has sent to the world today is chilling: in Ghana, accountability is for opponents, and impunity is for friends,”_ it added.
*NPP’s Demands*
1. The Attorney-General should immediately discontinue all cases against appointees of the previous NPP administration currently standing trial, _“as a matter of consistency and fairness.”_
2. *Bernard Antwi Boasiako [Chairman Wontumi]* must be immediately acquitted and discharged. The party said his 20-year sentence was _“politically motivated and procured without sufficient evidence.”_
