The Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Hon. Moses Abor, has condemned what he describes as an attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Accra High Court.
In a statement, Hon. Abor said some officers allegedly from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) attempted to forcibly arrest and whisk away the MP on Tuesday morning, shortly after he made submissions in court during the bail hearing for Salomey Baffoe Awiti.
Salomey Baffoe is standing trial for allegedly abetting the publication of false information by social media personality Ghana Jollof. Her bail application has been adjourned to September 24 after the prosecution asked for more time to respond.
According to Hon. Abor, the MP was in no breach of the law and the attempt to arrest him in court was unwarranted.
"Once again, the Mahama-led NDC administration has demonstrated their insatiable love for the consistent disregard for the rule of law, justice and due process by the embarrassing attempt by some unprofessional officers allegedly from EOCO to forcibly arrest and whisk away Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah," the statement said.
"It is very regrettable to witness such an unwarranted and needless attack on our country's lawmaker who is in no breach of the law in the slightest way."
He described the incident as a bizarre and irresponsible abuse of state power to intimidate members of the opposition.
Hon. Abor has therefore called on party stakeholders, national executives and aspirants, Members of Parliament, former government appointees, constituency organizers and the rank and file of the party to show up in court tomorrow in solidarity with Salomey Baffoe Awiti and Hon. Baffour Awuah.
He said the show of solidarity is to collectively resist what he termed as oppression by the NDC administration.
The incident has already sparked reactions from the legal fraternity, with private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu arguing that EOCO should have written to the Speaker of Parliament before attempting to invite the MP, in line with parliamentary convention.
