“NPP Is Playing Politics With Public Tribunals Bill” - Kwesimintsim MP Buckman

Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim, Lawyer Philip Fiifi Buckman, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party of playing politics with the newly passed Public Tribunals Bill, 2026.

Speaking to the media at Parliament House after the bill was passed this week, Hon. Buckman said the credit for the reform will go to the National Democratic Congress government led by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the Kwesimintsim MP, the Public Tribunals Bill is aimed at enhancing justice delivery, particularly for criminal cases.

“The glory of this bill will go to the NDC government. The Public Tribunals Bill will enhance our justice delivery system especially criminal cases. So therefore they want to bastardize it,” he said.

Hon. Buckman argued that Ghanaians are tired of propaganda and want a government that delivers on its promises.

“Ghanaians have moved beyond the propaganda and settings of the NPP. They are looking out for a government that works the talk like the NDC,” he stated.

The MP clarified that the new law is different from the Provisional National Defence Council, PNDC, tribunal era.

Hon. Buckman explained that the tribunals will handle specific offenses including narcotics, income tax, customs, minerals and mining cases — including galamsey — at the district or regional level.

He added that each tribunal will be composed of three persons: a chairman who is a lawyer qualified to be a High Court judge, and two other members from the community or district.

Parliament passed the Public Tribunals Bill, 2026 this week to help fast-track cases that have piled up in the courts.
