Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called for the law to take its full course in the alleged sexual misconduct case involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.
She described the case as a very serious matter of national concern that should not be taken lightly, especially due to its impact on the lives and future of the students involved.
"What I want to say at this point is that this is a very, very serious matter. It is a matter of concern to all of us, and it is a matter of national concern," she stated.
"What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course, because this is a very serious matter, especially as it affects the lives of people, not only in the present, but also going into the future. So, let's allow the law to take its course," she added.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made the remarks upon her return from the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai, China.
Her comments come after the interdiction and subsequent arrest of Mr. Abdulai over allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse involving female students.
According to the Police, a 20-year-old Form Two student of the school, accompanied by her father, lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026. Other reports indicate that 19 other girls have allegedly been abused by the headmaster.
The case has attracted widespread public attention, with calls for a thorough investigation.
Prior to the Vice President's comments, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, had criticised her for not speaking publicly on the matter, arguing that her silence was disappointing.
Mr. Aboagye said women and girls expected the Vice President, as Ghana's first female Vice President, to be vocal on issues concerning their safety, rights and welfare, particularly those involving the protection of children.
The allegations against Mr. Abdulai remain under investigation.
