One person has died after a building collapsed at Avenor in North Kaneshie, Greater Accra, with emergency teams still working to rescue others feared trapped under the rubble.
Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey confirmed the death during a visit to the site on Sunday, June 7. He said efforts were ongoing to evacuate additional persons believed to be under the debris.
The collapse happened earlier Sunday opposite the Ashfoam showroom and next to Melcom Plus. The structure, a three-storey building still under construction, was reportedly planned as a residential facility with shops on the ground floor.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service are leading the search and rescue operation, supported by other security agencies. Fire officers say they are trying to access parts of the collapsed building where more victims may be trapped. Heavy-duty equipment has been brought in to assist the operation.
Authorities are urging the public to stay away from the area so rescue teams can work without obstruction as efforts to locate and save any remaining survivors continue.
