The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the killing of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast. Her body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.
The suspect, Michael Mensah, was picked up on Monday, June 15, 2026, around 7:15 p.m. by the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at Pedu Lorry Station. Police said the arrest followed sustained intelligence-led operations.
Preliminary findings show that on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., Mensah picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza, located within the university’s hostel area. He then drove Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.
Investigators say Mensah claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver.
A roommate of the deceased told police that Innocentia had called her to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She left her room in casual clothes and never returned, which raised concern among friends and family.
Her body was later found at the beach under circumstances that are still being investigated.
Police say Mensah is in custody and assisting with investigations. They assured the public that inquiries are ongoing and more details will be released as the case develops.
