A police officer has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old law student of Central University, Ivan Apprey Baidoo.
General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, 34, who was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at Police Headquarters, Accra, was arraigned before the Adabraka District Court on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
He has been charged with intentionally causing the death of the student by unlawful harm, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the facts presented by the prosecution, the incident happened on August 27, 2026. Baidoo had booked a Yango motorbike from Ashongman Estates to the East Legon AstroTurf Park to play football.
The rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, is said to have jumped a red light at the UPSA traffic intersection where Corporal Koranteng was on duty. The officer allegedly chased the motorbike and signalled the rider to stop, but the rider failed to stop and continued through Okponglo traffic light and Tetteh Quarshie Interchange onto the Tema Motorway.
The prosecution alleges that after the old tollbooth on the Tema Motorway, the officer kicked the motorbike with his leg while in pursuit, causing the rider to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier.
It is further alleged that the officer did not stop to assist the victims but sped off.
Baidoo and the rider were later rushed to the Tema General Hospital by some good Samaritans. Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival, while the rider was treated and discharged.
A postmortem examination conducted on September 3 by Dr. Eric Dumfeh, a pathologist at the Tema General Hospital, established that Baidoo died from haemorrhagic shock due to bilateral haemothorax and haemoperitoneum resulting from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.
The case was taken over by the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department on September 8. The officer was arrested on September 12 after preliminary investigations linked him to the incident. He had earlier been identified and interdicted by the Police Service.
The Police said the Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau is also probing the officer's conduct.
The family of the deceased had earlier called for a transparent investigation and prosecution if culpability is established. His father, Evans Baidoo, had insisted his son did not die in an ordinary accident.
