The government has launched the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in Ahanta West and Mpohor Fiase in the Western Region, as part of efforts to formalise small-scale mining and protect the environment.
Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Dr Yusif Sulemana, said the programme is meant to give small-scale miners a legal and organised way to work responsibly.
The Bole-Bamboi Member of Parliament explained that bringing their activities into a formal structure would encourage environmentally conscious mining and ensure that communities that host mineral resources benefit more directly from the sector.
Speaking to stakeholders at the launch, Mr. Sulemana stressed that responsible mining should go beyond extracting minerals. It should also create jobs, improve livelihoods and support local development.
He said mining activities should support the work of local assemblies and traditional authorities, whose involvement is key to promoting responsible practices in mining communities.
The launch is part of broader efforts to build a more organised and sustainable small-scale mining sector. Through rCOMSDEP, the government wants to give miners the chance to operate within a recognised system, while protecting the environment and ensuring that mineral wealth contributes to development in host communities.
