“Resource Our Courts Instead” - Akyem Oda MP Opposes Public Tribunals Bill 2026

Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has vehemently opposed the passage of the Public Tribunals Bill 2026, arguing that Ghana’s existing court system needs resourcing, not a parallel tribunal structure.

Speaking to the media at Parliament House after the Minority boycotted the passage, Hon. Acquah said priority should be given to expanding and equipping the courts.

“Our court system needs more buildings, more judges and more staff to help equip our courts and ensure justice and accountability in the country,” he stated.

According to the MP, the tribunal system carries negative connotations and will not solve the problem of case backlogs.

“Tribunals system connotes negative. But to fast-track our court cases, we need more resources and reforms to ensure cases are being handled properly,” Hon. Acquah said.

Parliament passed the Public Tribunals Bill 2026 with the stated aim of speeding up the adjudication of cases that have piled up in various courts across the country.

The Akyem Oda legislator further alleged that the NDC government intends to appoint party sympathizers as judges for the proposed Regional Tribunals in the districts.

“Though some judges are politically biased, they do it above board and still deliver justice,” he alleged.

Hon. Acquah also cited the Trade Union Congress, TUC, which he said has condemned the introduction of tribunals at the expense of strengthening the court system.

The Minority in Parliament staged a walkout during the passage of the bill, maintaining that resources should be channeled into the judiciary instead.
