Stop Dumping Refuse in Gutters’ – Works Minister Tells Ghanaians

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has urged Ghanaians to take personal responsibility to reduce flooding across the country.

Addressing a press conference on flooding, Mr. Speaker, the Minister said indiscriminate waste disposal is a major cause of inundation during rains.

“The way we throw rubbish outside and also in gutters when raining. All those things are not good. The same people will turn around and blame the government for not doing anything about it,” Hon. Adjei said.

He stressed that while government is doing its part through drainage works and flood control programmes, citizens must also help.

“As a citizen you have to also help to reduce flooding,” he urged.

On accommodation challenges, the Minister said many teachers and nurses reject postings to rural areas due to poor housing.

He disclosed that government has started building residential facilities in some districts. “They are trying to get some funds to expand to other districts so when they post teachers or nurses they can get nice accommodation,” he stated.
