Three people are dead and nine others nursing gunshot wounds after unidentified gunmen stormed Odomi in the Nkwanta South Municipality Thursday evening.
The attack on June 18 has deepened fears in the Oti Region community, which has been grappling with recurring conflict.
*Evening Raid Sparks Panic*
Residents say the gunmen entered Odomi amid ongoing tensions in the area, opening fire and sending people fleeing for safety.
The injured were rushed to St. Joseph Catholic Hospital in Nkwanta for emergency care.
*One Dies in Hospital, Two Killed on Farms*
Hospital sources confirmed that one victim died while receiving treatment. Two others were brought in dead. They were reportedly attacked on their farms before being transported to the facility.
The identities of the attackers and the motive behind the raid remain unknown.
*Security Forces Step Up Patrols*
In response, security personnel backed by the military have intensified patrols in Odomi and surrounding communities.
Authorities say the increased presence is aimed at restoring calm and preventing reprisal attacks.
*Chiefs’ Committee Yet to Start Work*
The bloodshed comes just days after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced a seven-member committee to tackle the protracted conflict in the municipality.
The committee has not yet been inaugurated. It is expected to consult stakeholders and propose lasting solutions to the recurring violence.
*Residents Demand More Protection*
Locals are appealing to government and security agencies to tighten security in vulnerable communities while efforts to contain the unrest continue.
