The Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, says two and a half years is enough time to fix Ghana’s local government system.
Mr. Ayariga said he is optimistic about turning around the sector before the end of the Mahama administration, insisting that many of the problems are organizational and can be solved with better coordination, leadership and effective management.
According to him, local government is the face of government for most citizens because it is the level they interact with daily, and strengthening it is key to restoring public confidence.
“I believe that even though I have barely two and a half years, that is enough time to fix the system,” he said in an interview.
He said his experience in various roles in government gives him the capacity to lead the charge, working closely with regional ministers and MMDCEs to improve delivery.
Mr. Ayariga also noted that there are significant resources at the local government level that have not been fully utilized, and his focus will be on better coordination and efficient use of those resources to address challenges at the local level.
