The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is to construct 28 residential blocks to address its accommodation challenges under a US$500 million project.
The project, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, is expected to accommodate up to 28,000 students and will be executed over five years under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed this at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between UCC and GSC Property Investment Limited on Wednesday, September 16.
According to the Minister, the project is aimed at tackling the acute accommodation deficit facing the university.
"The agreement is for the expansion of accommodation infrastructure to deal with the acute accommodation deficit of the University of Cape Coast," he said.
He explained that the project will be undertaken at no direct cost to the state, as the university is expected to finance its obligations through accommodation fees paid by students.
He however directed the university to ensure that the fees remain affordable for students as it implements the arrangement.
Mr. Iddrisu noted that the partnership will run over a longer period, after which ownership of the facilities will be transferred to the university under the BOT arrangement.
