Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for greater public access to publications that document Ghana's political party histories, saying historical knowledge is essential to deepening citizens' understanding of governance and the country's constitutional arrangements.
She made the call at the launch of six historiographies of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
According to the Vice President, making such records available to the public will help citizens better appreciate the political experiences that have shaped the Republic and enable them to take part more meaningfully in political life.
She stressed that knowledge of political history should not be limited to those who lived through the events, but should be preserved and shared with present and future generations.
"Familiarity with our governance institutions, with our constitutional arrangements, and the political experiences that have shaped our Republic" is important for meaningful civic participation, she said.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang explained that when citizens have access to historical knowledge, they are better placed to understand the institutions and processes that govern the country and the developments that have influenced Ghana's political system.
She added that younger generations and other members of the public must also be given the opportunity to learn from the country's political past.
"When that knowledge is accessible, citizens are better placed to participate meaningfully in political life. The knowledge of history is also not restricted to those who have lived through it," she said.
The Vice President expressed the hope that the newly launched publications would be widely distributed to libraries, research institutions, private spaces and public officials to ensure the historical accounts reach a broader audience.
"It is my hope that these publications will reach libraries, research institutions, private spaces, and public officials too," she said.
She also urged regional and constituency executives of the NDC to keep copies of the publications in their offices, alongside other important historical documents.
