Skuumu, a community near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District, has been thrown into mourning after four suspected illegal miners died when a galamsey pit caved in on Wednesday afternoon.
The victims, said to be young men involved in illegal mining for survival, were buried underground when the pit collapsed around 4:00 pm.
Locals report that panic spread through the area immediately after the incident, with residents shouting for help.
According to reports, the land is owned by Volta Resource, a mining company that allegedly allowed illegal miners to operate there. Meanwhile, Logist Group Company Limited had been tasked by the government to reclaim the damaged land.
Rescue teams, security officers, and community members spent hours at the site before an excavator was used to recover the bodies.
One of the deceased has been named as Solomon Amadevor. The identities of the other three have not yet been made public.
The incident has renewed worries over the deadly risks of illegal mining and the desperate measures some young people take to earn quick money through galamsey.
