The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe Constituency and Second Deputy Minority Whip in Parliament, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has renewed his call on the Minister of Education and government to prioritize and complete the Upper Weija STEM School.
According to him, the project is already 70 percent complete and substantial investment has already been made in it.
Hon. Ahmed Shaib made the call while speaking at the 2nd Edition of the MP's Freshers Fund where over 1,700 newly admitted SHS One students were supported with basic educational supplies.
He said as beneficiaries are celebrated, there is the need to confront broader educational challenges facing students and families in the constituency.
"Ladies and gentlemen, as we celebrate today's beneficiaries we must also confront the broader educational challenges facing students and families within our constituency," he said.
He lamented the difficulties associated with SHS placements which continue to cause anxiety and frustration for parents and students.
"The difficulties associated with senior high school placements continue to cause considerable anxiety and frustration for many students and parents. Students who have qualified including some with very excellent results are still struggling to secure placements. Some are assigned to schools or programs that do not reflect their preferred choices," he stated.
He added that some parents have to make repeated visits to education offices to secure suitable placements.
"In some cases parents must make repeated visits to education offices or navigate unfamiliar processes in search of a suitable placement for their children. For students who have worked hard to complete their basic education and pass the BECE, this experience can be discouraging. For parents and guardians it brings additional financial, emotional and practical pressure," he said.
It is against this background, he said, that he is renewing his call for the completion of the school.
"It is against this background that I wish to renew my call to the Honourable Minister of Education and the government to prioritize and complete the Upper Weija STEM School which is already seventy percent complete," Hon. Ahmed Shaib said.
"A substantial investment has already been made in this very important project. We should not allow that investment and the hopes attached to it to remain unfulfilled," he added.
