Twelve people died and two others are fighting for their lives after a deadly collision on the Nkenkensu stretch in the Offinso North District on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash involved a commercial mini-bus and a trailer. Police say the bus was heading from Kumasi to Techiman while the trailer was traveling in the opposite direction from Techiman to Kumasi.
Eyewitnesses told journalists the mini-bus driver tried to overtake another vehicle and swerved into the path of the oncoming trailer, causing a head-on collision.
One witness, Eric, said the accident happened around 2:00 p.m. but help was slow to arrive. “It took more than an hour before an ambulance arrived to transport the injured victims to the hospital,” he said.
Medical staff at Nkenkensu Government Hospital confirmed that twelve passengers were dead on arrival. Two survivors are in critical condition and receiving treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent to the hospital morgue for identification and preservation.
Police have cleared the damaged vehicles from the road to reduce traffic congestion and have opened investigations into the cause of the crash.
The incident has renewed public concern about reckless overtaking and road safety on Ghana’s major highways.
