Article: "The Silent Cardiac Crisis in a Can: Could Ghana Be Overlooking the Risks of Energy Drinks?" by Princilla Yayra Azumah

Energy drinks have become the go-to boost for Ghanaian youth, commercial drivers, gym enthusiasts, and night shift workers. Marketed as a quick fix for energy and focus, the vibrant beverages have taken over shops, kiosks, and social gatherings across the country. But health experts including Princilla Yayra Azumah, are raising alarm over what they call a “silent cardiac crisis” hiding in the can.

While there have been no reported deaths linked to energy drink consumption in Ghana, medical professionals say that does not mean the danger is not real. Many symptoms of heart-related complications from these drinks are often ignored or misdiagnosed.

The concern has been heightened by an international case that drew global attention. In 2025, a 17-year-old girl, Larissa Rodriguez in Texas, died after regularly consuming two energy drinks a day. According to a family lawsuit, an autopsy revealed she suffered from cardiomyopathy triggered by the caffeine in the drinks.

Ghanaian doctors are now urging caution. They advise citizens, especially young people, to limit intake to no more than two energy drinks per day.

Medical researchers note that the main ingredient in most energy drinks is caffeine, often combined with Guarana, Taurine, and high amounts of sugar. Consumed in excess, the combination can be harmful to the heart. Experts also warn that mixing energy drinks with alcohol significantly increases the risk of heart attack.

Other health complications linked to excessive consumption include irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure, seizures, and heart palpitations. The risks are higher for people with existing heart conditions or those who take large amounts of caffeine daily. Health guidelines recommend not exceeding 400mg of caffeine per day, but doctors question whether consumers in Ghana pay attention to the values on cans and bottles.

“Energy drinks are taking center stage in Ghana, and this breeds worry that Ghanaians may not be aware of the adverse effects,” the article notes. “Although there have not been any reported cases of deaths in Ghana as in Texas, everyone agrees that it is only a matter of time before something like that happens here.”

Health professionals are therefore calling for greater public awareness and more responsible consumption, warning that without a change in habits, Ghana could be sitting on a preventable health crisis.
