Canada Tightens Study Visa Rules.

Canada is tightening its international student system, making it harder for some graduates to stay, work and eventually gain permanent residency. For 2026, the government has set a target of 408,000 study permits, including 155,000 for new international students. Applicants now face tougher financial and study requirements, while access to post-graduation work permits will depend more on the qualification, institution and, in some cases, field of study. The changes could particularly affect students from African countries, some of whom in the past have treated the prospect of studying in Canada as a route to permanent settlement. Canada says the measures are aimed at reducing temporary resident numbers and easing pressure on housing and the labor market.
