Chosen Rehab Center, a faith-based rehabilitation facility, has sensitized 3,000 students from Legon Presec SHS on the dangers of drug abuse.
Founder and Director of the center, Apostle Cobi Washington, urged government to support rehab centers nationwide. He warned that many young people are becoming a burden to the state due to addiction.
He described drug abuse as a major threat to Ghana’s economic growth, since the youth expected to lead the country in future are unable to contribute meaningfully if they are battling addiction.
Apostle Washington said the drug crisis is worsening daily. He revealed that Chosen Rehab Center now admits children as young as 12 years old for rehabilitation.
He also called on churches to partner with rehab centers to educate members, especially the youth, on the harmful effects of drug abuse.
Public Relations Officer Noah King said the school engagement was based on a survey showing that drug addiction is spreading quickly across the country.
He noted that many young addicts are first introduced to drugs in senior high school, so early intervention in schools is critical.
King added that the center has already partnered with the Ministry of Education and the Narcotics Control Board to expand the campaign nationwide, beyond Accra.
Some students who participated told reporters the programme was impactful and beneficial. They encouraged organizers to extend the education to junior high schools as well.
