Head of the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu, Prof. Alfred Doku, is cautioning Ghanaians against alcohol consumption, describing it as unsafe in any quantity.
Speaking during activities to mark World Heart Day 2026, Prof. Doku said while some people talk about a glass of wine a day or specific units for men and women, health authorities including the World Health Organization (WHO) have established that no amount of alcohol is safe.
According to him, alcohol damages vital organs of the body.
“WHO and other health organizations have identified alcohol in any quantity as unsafe. Unsafe for your liver, unsafe for your heart, unsafe for your stomach, unsafe for your oesophagus,” he said.
Prof. Doku said given the health risks, the advice to the public is straightforward.
“So we tell the community, don’t take alcohol,” he stressed.
