President John Dramani Mahama says government has set aside GH¢100 million in the 2027 budget for Ghana’s 10 Technical Universities, with each school slated to receive GH¢10 million for infrastructure, innovation, and skills training.
The President disclosed this on Tuesday, May 26, while opening the 2026 Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities of Ghana, ARCTUG 2026, at Takoradi Technical University.
He said the funding is part of a wider plan to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training and place technical universities at the heart of Ghana’s industrialization and economic transformation drive.
President Mahama noted that 2026 will mark a decade since polytechnics were converted into technical universities. He stressed that the institutions must be properly resourced to deliver on their mandate of producing skilled graduates for innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrial growth.
Before delivering his address, the President, joined by Vice-Chancellors of all 10 Technical Universities, toured student and lecturer exhibitions showcasing innovative projects and research.
ARCTUG is held every two years under the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana. It brings together policymakers, academics, industry players, and development partners to discuss applied research and innovation for national development.
This year’s event, hosted by Takoradi Technical University, is expected to feature more than 276 research papers from Ghana and abroad. The theme is “Advancing TVET for Innovation, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development.”
Speaking on the theme, Takoradi Technical University Vice-Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun urged greater investment and institutional backing so technical universities can contribute more effectively to Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu also assured participants that the Ministry will continue to push for adequate funding for TVET to maximize its impact on national development.
