Public transport fares across Ghana will go up by 20% starting Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana have announced.
The two transport bodies said the adjustment was triggered by sustained increases in fuel prices and the cost of vehicle spare parts, which have squeezed operators and vehicle owners.
“These rising operational costs have made it difficult for drivers and vehicle owners to maintain vehicles and remain in business,” the groups said in a joint statement issued on Saturday, May 30.
They noted that key consumables and parts such as tyres, engine oil, batteries, and other spares have seen sharp price jumps in recent months, deepening financial strain in the sector.
The 20% increase will cover all public transport services nationwide, including intra-city trotro, inter-city buses, and shared taxis.
To ease the rollout, updated fare charts will be posted at lorry stations before June 2. Passengers are being urged to check the approved rates at their stations and pay only what is listed.
“We understand the burden any fare adjustment places on commuters. This decision was taken only after all other options were exhausted. We appeal to the public for understanding and cooperation as we implement this adjustment,” the statement said.
The unions warned drivers and mates against charging above the approved rates. A taskforce, working with the Police MTTD, will monitor major stations to ensure compliance. “Anyone found overcharging will face sanctions,” they added.
The transport operators also repeated calls for government to review taxes on spare parts and take steps to stabilize fuel prices. They said such measures would reduce pressure on both operators and commuters and help maintain safe, reliable and affordable transport services.
