The Member of Parliament for Kumawu Constituency and Chairperson of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, has joined the global call to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a strong message on early detection and regular screening.
In a video message released from his office as part of activities with the Barima Foundation in Kumawu Constituency, the MP said there is a need to correct the misconception that breast cancer affects only women.
According to him, breast cancer is a type of cancer that affects breast tissues when cells begin to grow abnormally, and men are also at risk.
"Generally the perception out there is that breast cancer only affects women, but breast cancer affects both men and women," Hon. Anim stated. "Men also get affected when these tissues begin to grow abnormally within their breast tissue."
He said the observation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October should remind every Ghanaian to be conscious of their breast health.
"Early detection saves lives. It is always advisable that on a regular basis we have checkups and check all our body parts, especially where issues of cancer can affect," he said.
Addressing his constituents directly, Hon. Anim encouraged all residents of Kumawu to take advantage of the free health intervention being rolled out in the area.
"To my constituents both men and women in Kumawu, I encourage that as we enter the Breast Cancer Awareness Month we all take opportunity... The Barima Foundation is organizing breast cancer awareness and free breast screening where we as citizens and constituents will have the opportunity to go check our breast."
He made a special appeal to men to participate in this year's exercise for the first time, to ensure any signs or symptoms are detected early for preventive action.
The Barima Foundation’s Breast Cancer Education and Clinical Screening Programme is expected to be held in communities across the Kumawu Constituency throughout the month of October.
